September Beauty Roundup: Getting Started With Gender Fluid Makeup

It’s 2022 and we’re still seeing most makeup products marketed solely towards women but what about everyone else?

Let’s start by clearly something up: Nothing about makeup is solely for women. In fact, the very origins of makeup came from ancient Egypt where it was used by all genders and actually used to communicate things like wealth and status.

Despite the gatekeeping of makeup by major beauty brands, beauty products and fashion have long been used as a tool to break down outdated gender stereotypes—think Prince wearing makeup and heels and stating, “I’m not a woman. I’m not a man. I am something that you will never understand.” Despite his look not being particularly well received when he first opened for the Rolling Stones in 1981, he didn’t falter in who he was and needless to say, he will forever be known as one of the biggest stars in history.

Now, newer celebrities like Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny and makeup guru Bretman Rock are continuing to break down the archaic idea of gender conformity in beauty and fashion with their flawless fashion and beauty looks.

So for those who are looking to try out a makeup look but might be at a loss as to where to start, we’ve rounded up a list of five key beauty products that will give you a great introduction into the world of makeup products. Check out the list below and remember: start with a base to create flawless skin, then add a little touch of colour from blush, lipstick and don’t forget to add some flawless brows.

A tinted, lightweight BB cream is a great cream to start with if you’re new to the world of concealers and foundations. And Tarte’s tinted BB cream is ideal for its breathable and buildable coverage—allowing you to test out levels of coverage you’re looking for. With a built-in primer, the BB cream will also blur imperfections, even out your skin tone and give you a youthful-looking glow. The treatment also contains anti-aging properties as well as chemical-free SPF30 sun protection from both UVA and UVB rays—protecting your skin in the long run too.

Anyone with a flawless face will tell you that looking after your skin is the secret to a perfect look—and you can’t forget the hair! Indulge your hair with K18’s Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask, clinically proven to reverse damage in just four minutes. The treatment contains a bioactive peptide that strengthens and improves elasticity of the hair by repairing broken polypeptide chains (keratin chains)—reducing damage done to the hair from things like heat and styling. And most importantly, while it moisturises and detangles, it doesn’t weigh down the hair!

A cult classic, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer is loved for its ability to enhance your natural beauty. And while often overlooked, don’t underestimate the power of some flawless brows to frame your face! Anastasia Beverly Hills’ retractable pencil comes in a whole host of shades, each with a unique triangular tip that gives you the creative ability to draw and fill in your brows in the most natural way. The sharpest point allows you to gently draw thin, fine lines that emulate your eyebrow hair. The back-side of the pencil is slightly thicker allowing you to mix up the hair-like strokes you draw, while the side of the pencil is the widest point allowing you to draw very broad strokes.

A personal favourite, Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Cheek & Lip Stain is a tiny bottle of youthful glow. The pink stain can be used for everything and on every makeup look—add a few drops to your cheekbones for a natural glow, add some to your lips for a slightly stained pout, you can even add some to your eyelids for a faint pinkish eyeshadow look. It’s perfect for the days when you don’t want a full-face of makeup and just want to give your skin a little wake-up, and alternatively, it works perfectly on top of a full face of foundation to create some depth and glow to your look. The iconic rose-tinted stain was actually created for an exotic dancer in the 1970s and has since become a favourite to many around the globe.

Now that we’ve got a nice BB-cream base, a dewy blush and flawless brows, the final step to a perfect makeup look is the lips. And Hourglass Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm’s is a great product to start off with. The product quickly sold out across the globe once users realised it gave an instant ultra-glossy and plumping look. It’s an all-in-one lip gloss-balm that hydrates the lips while giving you intense colour and shine. And no matter how good it makes your lips look, no one likes a drying formula that’s uncomfortable to wear—and thankfully, this formula will keep your lips conditioned all night, providing you with a comfortable wearing experience.
